BLEACH GREEN REOPENED

The Bleach Green viaduct and through line from Belfast to Antrim was closed in 1978 and trains were re-routed via Lisbum and Crumlin. In 1998, a project to reopen the line was given the go-ahead. The new scheme involved refurbishing the viaduct, relaying the track between Bleach Green Junction to Antrim, and providing new signalling and new stations at Mossley West and Templepatrick. A steam locomotive was used in track refurbishment as the diesel tractor units used to carry track ballast had insufficient braking power for the gradients involved. Protests were made over the proposed withdrawal of services from Crumlin and a compromise was reached with the retention of three weekday services. A new timetable was introduced in June 2001 with accelerated times on the Londonderry line.
