CO-OPERATION AND MARKET SEGMENTATION - NON-POLITICAL BARRIERS REPLACING POLITICAL BARRIERS POST DEREGULATION

The purpose of the paper is to scrutinise the nature of competition that emerges after deregulation, both in terms of concentration and in terms of intensity in the interaction among competitors. The process of deregulation in the taxicab industry was chosen for a more detailed study. The reason for this selection is that the degree of concentration after deregulation varies between different regions due to differences in entry barriers and demography. The paper begins with an outline of the theoretical framework for the study. Competition in the taxicab industry after deregulation will then be described and categorised, in order to make possible the analysis of interaction between competitors in different geographical areas with different competitive situations. The paper ends with a discussion of why different interaction patterns have emerged and how these patterns can be related to the effects of deregulation discussed in the introduction of the paper.
