TELEMEDICINE: DEVELOPMENT OF A MEDICAL TREATMENT SYSTEM FOR THE WORLD'S FIRST DEEP SEA MINING SHIP

Telemedicine is the art of practicing medicine over long distance communication facilities such as telephone, telex, high frequency radio, satellite, etc. The author has been practicing telemedicine with a high seas fishing fleet for five years. This has led to the development of a medical system which consists of a standard pharmacy and text plus the training of a lay person who functions as the ship's doctor. With physician consultants available by any communication link, the system is complete. Although sophisticated in its design, the system is quite simple in use and provides the medical needs of a vessel whose crew is not engaged in hazardous work.
