COMMUTERS' ATTITUDES AND VALUATION OF THE PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM IN STOCKHOLM

This paper concentrates on identification of soft qualities that are of importance for the choice between different vehicle types, such as rail and bus services for local trips. Examples of soft attributes are comfort, information and personal safety both inside the vehicle and on the station. Knowledge about the passengers' responses of improved public transport has also been captured. The results include both monetary values and attitudes of the soft attributes for different market segments. The public transport user's preferences for train systems in comparison with buses have been surveyed in a large number of studies. Still there is a lack of including soft attributes, such as service and comfort, in travel demand models. A previous survey made in Sweden revealed great demand for the expression in economic terms of attributes such as high comfort. A pilot study and discussions in focus groups were followed by questionnaire development. Stated preference was used as the methodology and with ca 1700 answers the work ended in stated choice models and conclusions concerning attitudes towards the public transport system in Stockholm, Sweden. The paper presents the development work together with the more dominant results. For the covering abstract and the URL of the conference see ITRD E205769. (A)
