PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL PROBLEMS OF TRAFFIC IN HISTORICAL CENTRES OF CITY

The author discusses prevailing conflicts and problems arising when reconstructing old towns. The focus is on the polish town Cracow. It is stated that information is crucial before the reconstruction begins. One major drawback following the reconstruction of the Cracow old town was an increase in accident rates. The reasons may be the lack of separation between pedestrians and vehicles and pavements not suited for motorised vehicles. Furthermore, the reduction of vehicles in the town centre may encourage pedestrians to more often violate traffic regulations, jaywalking or walking on red for instance, which in turn lead to more conflicts.
