DRIVERS WITH DISABILITIES: A SURVEY OF ADAPTED CARS, DRIVING HABITS AND SAFETY

FOERARE MED FUNKTIONSHINDER: EN UNDERSOEKNING OM ANPASSADE BILAR, KOERVANOR OCH SAEKERHET

Knowledge about disabled drivers has hitherto been poor. During 1999, the VTI therefore carried out a study commissioned by the Swedish National Road Administration. A questionnaire focused on the driver's disability, the equipment in the car, the use of the car, safety and possible accident involvement was sent to a sample of owners of cars which, according to the national vehicle register, were specially adapted to the drivers. The result is based on 793 replies. The study revealed that the drivers felt very safe in traffic and that they had a high level of confidence in the adapted car. The car was used for almost the whole distance travelled (90 per cent), which illustrates how dependent this group is on the car for independent mobility. Concerning the accident and injury risks, the differences were small in comparison to drivers in general. About one out of ten had been involved in an accident (mostly of a minor nature with only material damage) as a driver of the adapted car. A small number of accidents were attributed to problems with the special equipment in the car. The causes could be unfamiliarity with the controls, an adaptation that did not fully meet the needs of the individual or equipment that broke down. Several of the comments given by the respondents have been included in the report. The comments deal with increased security, near-accidents, parking places, etc. (A)
