JUSTIFYING INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS FROM A BUSINESS STANDPOINT ALONE
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are fleet management systems in the broadest sense of the term. Their intention is to improve real time management of operations, optimize fleet use, and minimize reserve requirements. They can also be used to help plan the optimum future fleet and its logistical support. All these uses bring potential monetary benefits to the operating agency. This article concentrates on the costs and benefits that are monetary and affect the operating agency; it also reviews the mathematical expression of the concept. It briefly summarizes some key monetary benefits that might offset the costs, and concludes with some case studies.
