DUCTED PROPELLER APPLICATIONS FOR MODERN SHIPS

Worldwide interest in the use of ducted propellers on large ships is reviewed. Current work indicating potential performance advantages for a broad range of ship applications is outlined, especially in new areas of high speed and/or large powers where predicted gains appear overwhelming. Application studies investigate high-performance ducted propellers for ships of 18,000 to 1,000,000 tons, including high-speed containerships, tankers, and Series 60 parent hulls. Two new basic ducted propeller types are presented for determining propulsor-hull interference. Highly efficient wake operation is predicted by generally avoiding higher duct thrust forces, contrary to an existing practice. On this basis, comparative trends of all application studies predict performance superiority over the open propeller. The ducted propeller may permit more alternatives for machinery selection from the viewpoint of higher allowable rpm's predicted. The economic aspects of ducted propeller use are indicated.
