The acoustic crack detector (ACD) is a special purpose, portable, ultrasonic system designed to locate fatigue cracks in steel bridge members. Its operation depends upon injecting short bursts of energy (high frequency vibratory waves) into the steel member, and detecting reflections from discontinuities such as may be produced by a crack. This information is automatically translated into a numerical readout which displays to the operator the distance to the discontinuity. /FHWA/
