PORT ECONOMICS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES--THE APPRAISAL OF PORT WAREHOUSE EXTENSION
The first paper deals in general terms with the problem of optimising the provision of harbour facilities, and then goes on to expand this in the case where there is a choice situation between lighterage and alongside berths, taking as a reference Port Louis harbour on the Island of Mauritius. Finally some of the practical problems involved in the application of the economic theory are discussed. The second discusses the use of inventory theory as a method of appraising extensions to warehouse capacity. The model is fundamentally simple and is based on the classical square root formula with an allowance for uncertainty in the holding of reserve stocks.
