JUNCTION DESIGN. IN: HANDBOOK OF TRANSPORT SYSTEMS AND TRAFFIC CONTROL

Road junction design can be complex, since the primary goals of safety and efficiency must be balanced with environmental, political and societal demands. This paper provides a detailed overview of three types of junctions: priority intersections, roundabouts and grade-separated junctions. For each type, information on standards, capacity, operation and design considerations are given. When designing a junction, the designer needs to consider potential conflict between users trying to use the same road space to execute different maneuvers, or the same maneuver at different speeds or on differing paths. Traffic composition and priority, appearance (including signage) and environmental intrusion are also important considerations in junction design.
