ELECTRIC AND HYBRID VEHICLE ENERGY STORAGE R&D PROGRAMS OF THE US DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY
The advanced automotive technologies (AAT) program of the U.S. Department of Energy supports the development of power electronics technologies and advanced energy storage, advanced direct-injection engines, fuel cells, lightweight materials, vehicle systems, and fuels for transportation applications. The goal of the AAT program is to enable automobiles to have the following characteristics: fuel flexibility; several times the fuel economy of current and comparable conventional vehicles; emissions in compliance with regulatory statutes that will be in place when the vehicles are manufactured; and safety, comfort, price and other attributes competitive with conventional vehicles. The paper addresses energy storage technology that focuses on high-power batteries for hybrid vehicles and high-energy batteries for electric vehicles, in addition to exploratory research that supports these features. This technology will advance the successful commercialization of hybrid electric vehicles and electric vehicles, and thus help to reduce dependence on petroleum fuels; decrease greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants from vehicles; and encourage the transition to renewable and sustainable energy sources.
