THAT AIR BAG IN THE STEERING WHEEL
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) mandated that 25% of all cars manufactured in model year 1988 must have had automatic front seat crash protection. For model year 1989, that figure jumped to 40%; by the 1990 model year, all cars were required to be equipped in this way. However, most automobile drivers and occupants do not fully understand the mechanisms that govern operation of these restraint systems. This article provides a brief descriptive overview of how these systems work.
