THREE SOLUTIONS FOR MULTIPLE-SETTING SWITCHES

Turnouts with low angles and large deflecting radii have been necessary to permit high speed operation on the branching track on speed upgraded conventional railways and new high speed lines. This article looks at a new approach to multiple setting and monitoring of switch tongues that has been developed in Austria to tackle this operational problem. Three solutions are available: hydraulic transmission of the setting force from the first to subsequent setting and locking devices; a hydraulic motor, transmission, and an encapsulated locking and setting system; and a combination of the drive systems with inductive safety installations.
