NDT TECHNIQUES FOR THE EVALUATION OF LOCK WALLS - A CLIENT'S PERSPECTIVE
British Waterways maintains and manages nearly 2000 km of canals throughout mainland Britain. With many parts of the system being in excess of 150 years old and with only limited funds there is an obvious need for a comprehensive Asset Management Programme. A significant part of this programme is the number of locks on the system. There have been a number of unforeseen wall failures in the last few years, each one requiring extensive rebuilding. This introduces a large variance into an already tight budget and usually results in other works having to be postponed. In an attempt to reduce the unforeseen nature of these wall failures British Waterways is carrying out a major inspection programme to assess the integrity of it's locks, and as part of this programme, they carried out a trial on a number of Non-Destructive Testing Techniques. Five Consultants were invited to propose a NDT methodology which would provide the most accurate information on the structure of a lock wall. As client, British Waterways are interested primarily in the accuracy of the interpreted data. The data from each Consultant is presented in the form of anomaly maps and then compared with a database. The results are analysed statistically and the system which provides the best correlation with the database identified. For the covering abstract see ITRD E111699.
