JUBILEE LINE EXTENSION PROJECT: MANAGEMENT AND MONITORING OF A 19TH CENTURY RAIL VIADUCT OVERLYING WORKS EXCAVATIONS
This paper describes the management and monitoring of a railway viaduct in London, UK, during construction of an underground railway link beneath the viaduct. Significant settlement was predicted to occur as a result of the excavation works, and compensation grouting was introduced to reduce distortions and prevent damage. Pre-contract investigations included a desk study; a condition survey and site measurements; load assessment of the structure as built, in its present condition, and for effects of settlement; monitoring the scheme development; considering excessive settlements; and a temporary propping scheme. Monitoring combined vibrating wire strain gauges and an electrolevel system, to monitor for changes in stresses and settlement. As a complementary system, mechanical strain gauges were provided. Results were reviewed frequently and trigger values determined to warn of change of stress. After completion of tunnelling works, further condition surveys will be undertaken.
