SQUEEZING THE BEST FROM ETC
This article describes the ORANGES electronic payment system proposed for use in the Orlando, Florida area of the USA. This employs a central financial clearing-house to provide a single account for payments due from the use of toll roads, buses and parking. Future developments may include entertainment and leisure facilities. The project is being tested by a partnership of the authorities involved, a consulting firm, two innovative payment technology companies and an educational institution. It allows the individual transport agencies to use their own payment systems: fare boxes with smart cards on the buses, transponders on toll roads and payment device readers in car parks. Because electronic payments are faster, more secure and cheaper to handle than hard currency, cost and efficiency improvements are expected.
