ANALYSIS OF TETRAALKYL LEAD IN STREET AIR

ANALYS AV TETRAALKYLBLY I GATULUFT

Tetramethyllead (TML) and tetraethyllead (TEL) are added to petrol in order to increase the octane number. This is the source of organic and in organic lead in air. An investigation of tetraalkyllead in stockholm air was carried out in 1979. Since that investigation, the maximum amount of organic lead permitted in petrol has been lowered. An increase in traffic intensity and in vehicle standard has occurred. The present investigation does not indicate any increase in the concentration of lead in the two Stockholm streets exmained. However, there appears to be an increase in the proportion of TML present. Average concentrations of organic lead (TML + TEL) in the two investigatd streets were during two days 0.15, 0.12 microgram/cubic metre respectively. Air in two car-park garages was also examined. In one of the two garages an average concentration of tml + tel of 3.50 microgram/cubic metre and separate top levels of 6.46 and 6.30 microgram/cubic metre were found.
