STATISTICS OF DAMAGES TO VEHICLES: A COMPARISON BETWEEN DIFFERENT STATISTICAL SOURCES AND AN ESTIMATE OF RISK--A PRE-INVESTIGATION

Traffic safety research depends to a great extent on the degree of coverage and on the reliability of the statistical sources. To be able to choose a statistical source and to know its possibilities of application, it is necessary to be acquainted with the composition, the imperfections and the contents of the different statistical sources. It is also important to try new methods for the collection of statistical data. The purpose of this project is partly to increase the knowledge of the traditional statistical sources by comparing them in some respects, partly to describe the damage-rates of different types of passenger cars by means of damage statistics based on interviews, and partly to try the possibility of obtaining relevant data by interviewing the people, who visit the Swedish Motor Vehicle Inspection Company in order to get their vehicles inspected. The project should be regarded as a contribution to the discussion regarding the development of better road accident statistics in this country. The work is very similar to a pre-investigation. In the project statistics, based on interviews, the Swedish Central Bureau of Statistics' road accident statistics, and road accident statistics of the associations responsible for the maintenance of roads, and the Swedish Association of Traffic Insurance Companies' statistics of damages to vehicles are compared. The comparison is made with regard to the time of the year, when the damage occurs and with regard to vehicle type. The report also gives, by means of the damage statistics based on interviews, an account of damage-rates for passenger cars from different regions, during different months with regard to annual driving distance and vehicle type. The experiences from the test with damage statistics, based on interviews, were positive. It is suggested that the technique should be further developed for future use. /Author/
