THE DESIGNS, MODEL TESTS AND SEATRIAL RESULTS OF A DUCTED PROPELLER FOR A 251,000 DWT TANKER
The single screw 215,000 dwt tanker Golar Nichu, built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Incorporated, is installed with a ducted propeller. The propeller is 5 bladed, has a diameter of 8200 mm., and is powered by 30,000 shp at 90 rpm. Sea trials and model tests were compared with similar experiments run on sister ships and resulted in an observed speed increase of 0.4 kts fully loaded and approximately the same increase under ballast. Numerous graphs and tables explain the trials and methods of analysis and formulas used are explained in some detail. The model tests of this size tanker were difficult and were misleading when individual components were not varied. However, these experiments indicate the speed and propulsive efficiency by ducting the propeller.
