THE SAN DIEGO CASE STUDY: BARRIO LOGAN'S MERCADO PROJECT. IN: THE NEW TRANSIT TOWN: BEST PRACTICES IN TRANSIT-ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT
This chapter details efforts in San Diego, California, to employ greater use of transit-oriented development (TOD) in order to deal with the city's rapid population growth, loss of open space available for commercial and residential use, and other factors impacting on overall quality of life. The focus is on Barrio Logan, an older community abutting the city's port district, and the successful use of TOD strategies to improve basic public infrastructure, fund needed street improvements, provide more affordable housing, and boost the neighborhood's flagging retail district.
