THE ATLANTA CASE STUDY: LINDBERGH CITY CENTER. IN: THE NEW TRANSIT TOWN: BEST PRACTICES IN TRANSIT-ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT

The building boom that caused the Atlanta metropolitan region to sprawl over 22 counties seemed unstoppable in the late 1990s, when it took an unusual twist. A regional telecommunications company and Atlanta's 2nd-largest employer, BellSouth, announced it would consolidate its suburban offices into 6 towers built on 3 sites, all within the city proper, and as near Atlanta's rail stations as possible. Lindbergh City Center, a joint development of BellSouth and MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority), would house 1 million sq. feet of offices above the Lindbergh Metro station, making it Atlanta's most recent and, at 47 acres, most ambitious transit-oriented development (TOD) project. This chapter provides an overview of the design, planning, and overall impacts of the Lindbergh City Center TOD project on the greater Atlanta area.
