SOUTHCENTRAL BECOMES SOUTHERN

The SouthCentral train operating company began rebranding the franchise as 'Southern' in the UK in May 2004. The Managing Director of Southern gives the reasons for the rebranding. People's awareness of SouthCentral as a brand was very low. SouthCentral asked people what they wanted from the railway and produced a list of values to aim for. Staff are being asked to 'think like a passenger'. The company is investing in renewing stations, new trains, staff accommodation, depot facilities, staff training and a new uniform. The Southern logo will only be put on something if it is up to the new standard. The new company will be called New Southern Railway Ltd, but the trading name is Southern. Train performance is the highest priority. The new Electrostars, ordered by the previous franchisee, have the Southern livery. Over 900 million is being spent on new trains and the Class 455 trains are being refurbished. Southern is putting 115 million into depot improvements and new timetables have been introduced. APTIS ticket-issuing machine replacement is taking place at all stations. Southern is launching a security task force of BT police, security contractors and its own revenue protection staff.
