HUMAN FACTORS APPROACH TO HOLD BAGGAGE SCREENING
This article discusses the human factors involved in hold baggage screening. There are two approaches to improving screener performance. The first is to develop new processes and technologies to provide greater operator support and the second is to focus on the training and performance management of the operator. Since over-automation of the screening process can potentially lead operators to assume passive rather than active roles in the decision-making process, new technologies are being developed to provide a detailed understanding of screener performance in an operational environment. One of these technologies is a software system that inserts fictional images of real threats and records the screeners' response to the image. Although such technologies offer a way to assess and improve screener performance, it is also necessary to have an effective selection process that uses tools to measure the skills relevant to the screener's task prior to training and to predict who will perform most effectively on the job.
