SETTING THE STAGE FOR SMART GROWTH

The York Region of Canada is located in the heart of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), one of the fastest growing areas in North America, with an influx of 40,000 new residents each year for the past five years, and nearly 20,000 new jobs created annually. This population growth has had a dramatic impact, not only on traffic congestion, but also on traffic patterns. This article examines the York Rapid Transit Plan (YRTP) that will allow for a streamlined operation with extended routes, increased hours of service and seamless region wide fares. The integrated YRTP is an ambitious, three-phased approach to develop a rapid transit system between the Region's urban centers along identified corridors interfacing with Toronto's subway system over the next 20 years. York Region projects a 30% increase in transit ridership in YRTP corridors, expecting to move 7,000 car trips a day off the highway system.
