A METHOD OF PARTICLE ANALYSIS BY SEDIMENTATION
ANALYSE GRANULOMETRIQUE PAR SEDIMENTATION
This purpose of the study reported here is to work out a "method of particle size analysis by sedimentation", that easily and rapidly yields precise and reproducible results. A critical examination of different testing methods resulted in the choice of ASTM standard D 422-63 as a starting point. The following comparative tests demonstrated that the reproductibility of the results is improved by the following two modification: an extra stirring with a manual agitator; determination at each test, of a global correction, taking into account the temperature of the sedimentation medium, the presence of the deflocculating agent and the existence of a meniscus. With the use of these two improvements, the results can be characterized by a standard deviation typical of an average operator (1 to 1.5%), and a standard deviation between operators (1 to 2%). /Author/
