USE OF HIGH MODULUS ASPHALT CONCRETE IN AIRPORT PAVEMENT STRUCTURES

This article considers the concept of equivalence factors as applied to the evaluation of high modulus bituminous mixes in airport pavement. The concept of the equivalence factor is described. This makes it possible to allow for the different mechanical properties of materials. For optimum use of high modulus bituminous concretes and asphalts on airport pavements, their specific equivalence factors must be determined. Test sections of pavement structures consisting of these specialist products were constructed. The bearing capacity was measured and a California Bearing Ratio index was determined which was extended to all sections. It was found that the equivalence factor of a material depends on the pavement layer in which it is used and on the overall pavement structure. The use of special bituminous mixes for airport pavement generates a saving due to thickness reduction. For the covering abstract see ITRD E120872.
