NON-MOTORIZED TRANSPORT AND TOURISM: A CASE STUDY--CYCLE TOURISM. IN: TOURISM AND TANSPORT. ISSUES AND AGENDA FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM
Tourism planners face a dilemma regarding their need to improve access at destinations while simultaneously managing demand from tourism transportation in a way that reduces energy consumption and environmental impacts. This chapter focuses on this dilemma and the related importance of nonmotorized transportation, particularly cycling, as a sustainable form of transportation in tourism. The cycling tourist, the infrastructure needed for cycle tourism, and tourism transportation as the attraction itself are examined. More attention in tourism and transportation research needs to be given to integrating nonmotorized transportation into the process of sustainable tourism development. This will extend the multidisciplinary research agenda to the analysis of space for nonmotorized modes and increased demands for car-free spaces in cities. Other research needs are highlighted.
