RETURN OF THE TROLLEYS
The transportation mode touted as being best-suited to serve the newer, high-density, mixed-use neighborhoods in urban/suburban downtown areas is the streetcar, the same mode that served cities the last time downtown living was fashionable. Streetcars have garnered national attention in part because of the great success of Portland, Oregon's system, which is credited with leveraging $1.3 billion in investment in the Pearl District, one of the nation's most vibrant urban revitalization projects. This article provides an overview of the recent successes of streetcars and trolleys in cities across the U.S., focusing on Portland and also on San Diego, California, and Tampa, Florida.
