ALL SYSTEMS GO FOR AUSTRIAN TRUCK TOLLS
This article describes the development of an electronic toll collection system for freight transport through Austria. An on-board unit communicates with sensors positioned on gantries over motorways and the charge depends on the number of axles and the distance driven. Initial signs are that the scheme has caused little trouble. Austria remains opposed to proposals to ban heavily polluting vehicles while allowing unrestricted transit by environmentally friendly vehicles: this could cause administrative problems at border checkpoints. In Germany, an electronic toll system is not progressing well because of software faults.
