THE INFLUENCE OF THE EU LEGISLATION ON VEHICLE RECYCLING
European legislation on end-of-life vehicle recycling has placed greater emphasis on the product responsibility of the manufacturer. The conflicting requirements in vehicle development are discussed and the development of legislation in the EU aimed at vehicle recycling is described. The key elements of the EU End-of-Life Vehicle Directive, published in September 2000, are outlined. From 2006 the practical recovery quota has to be at least 85%, increasing to 95% in 2015. Terminology for classifying processes and products relating to vehicle recycling is discussed. The main process steps of the end-of-life vehicle recovery chain are outlined. Target conflicts between recycling quotas and other environmental guidelines are considered. For the covering abstract see ITRD E120563.
