HOW WILL WE FULFIL VDA'S COMMITMENT ON FUEL CONSUMPTION?

Technological innovation for future vehicle development must demonstrate its environmental friendliness, cost-benefit ratio and practical value. In 1993, the German automobile industry agreed to lower the fuel consumption of its new vehicle fleet by 25% by the year 2005 relative to 1990. The European Automobile Manufacturers Association has committed to reduce average carbon dioxide emissions for new vehicles to 140 g/km carbon dioxide in the year 2008. These targets were set despite the general increase in vehicle weight. Concepts to fulfil the fuel consumption agreement can be classified as improvements of internal engine combustion, transmission measures, lightweight design, reduction of mechanical friction and air drag. The technological feasibility is demonstrated by the Lupo 3L TDI and Lupo FSI which have achieved fuel consumption values of 13/100 km and 51/100 km, respectively. The measures taken by the Audi/VW group to meet the targets are discussed. For the covering abstract see ITRD E120563.
