URBAN PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN INDIA: TRENDS, CHALLENGES AND INNOVATIONS
Demand for public transit has risen along with the rapid growth of Indian cities. From 1951 to 2001, travel on suburban rail has had a 7-fold increase in total passenger trips, from 412 million to 2999 million. This sharply rising demand for public transit has overwhelmed the existing system: trains and buses in most cities are dangerously overcrowded. This article presents a broad picture of the public transit sector in India, its trends, problems, challenges and planned development. Identified are several areas for improvement.
