WALK-BEHIND COMPACTORS: ROLLERS AND PLATES ARE ECONOMICAL AND EFFECTIVE

Walk-behind compactors are essential for paving projects in confined areas or on smaller walkways and paths. This article discusses some considerations for choosing the best walk-behind compactor. The type of material to be compacted and the size of the job will determine the most suitable walk-behind compactor. Vibration is considered essential for most paving jobs. Vibratory plate compactors use a flat surface riding over material to compact it and are best suited to granular material. Plate compactors are also small, so they are suitable for confined areas. Roller compactors use metal drums that roll over materials to achieve compaction, usually in vibratory mode except when finishing asphalt surfaces. Rollers cover more ground than plates, enhancing productivity on large jobs. Although roller machines generally make asphalt smoother than do plates, they are more expensive and larger than plate compactors. New innovations are enhancing the ergonomics and productivity of both roller and plate compactors.
