LIGHT METRO GAINS GROUND

The light metro of Genova, Italy has five stations over the 4.5 km between its western terminus at Brin and San Giorgio. A further section between San Giorgio and Brignole is being constructed and there are plans for extensions to Rivarolo and Staglieno. The costs of construction are high due to the hard rock on which the city lies. The project has always sought to make use of existing, under-used infrastructure. Details are given of the history of the light metro service in Genova. Construction began in the 1980s with work to adapt existing tunnels. On completion in 2010, the system is expected to be carrying 45 million passengers per year.
