SINKHOLES IN SINGAPORE

In a meeting of the British Tunneling Society in London, a technical advisor to the Land Transport Authority in Singapore presented a discussion titled "Settlements and Sinkholes in Singapore." Results from an analysis of sinkholes in Singapore were presented. The analysis showed that sinkholes occurred 1) at or around launching chambers or repetition shafts 2) when mixed faces or geological boundaries surrounded the tunnel face, or 3) where face pressure was well below natural water pressure. Inadequate face pressure and over- excavation were to blame for problems encountered in weathered rocks. To minimize risk of sinkholes in conditions similar to those of Singapore, the presenter suggested measures such has specifying the minimum length of ground treatment at break-in and break-out; improved method statements and risk assessments; ground interpretation; machine configuration and face stability. Other suggestions included additives, grouting, head access, maintenance, risk assessment and contingency planning.
