DAY FOR NIGHT : FEDEX IS BANKING ON ENHANCED VISION SYSTEMS TO IMPROVE ITS PERFORMANCE WHILE BOOSTING SAFETY
Federal Express has announced that it will outfit its entire fleet of A300s, A310s, MD-10s and MD-11s with EVS, an enhanced vision system that allows pilots to land in poor virility that would otherwise force a go-around or diversion. With this system, a head-up display and an infrared sensor project a video image onto a HUD screen, giving the pilot a clear, though green-tinted, view at nighttime and, to some degree, in rain and fog. Federal Express' adoption of the system is a major breakthrough for EVS, and it would seem that now that FedEx is a client, the FAA will approve operations. Others are not so sure, speculating that airlines don't feel a pressing need for the system, since unlike FedEx they don't carry high-value assets and rarely fly into smaller uncontrolled airports.
