THE EVOLUTION OF THE REINFORCING BAR

This article provides a brief history of the use of steel bars in reinforced concrete. The first steel-reinforced concrete construction systems were used in the mid-19th century. These early systems used square twisted bars. The first materials specifications for steel reinforcing bars were developed in 1910. New "lugged" bars were introduced in the 1910s-1930s period. These bars were precursors of the modern deformed bars. A diamond pattern bar which was first used in the 1920s still meets current specifications and is in use today. The American Society for Testing and Materials developed new standards in 1947 that outline several specifications for deformed reinforcing steel. Reinforcing bar producers and fabricators have their own association, the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute, which was established in 1924.
