STUDY OF ROUGH GROUND AND GRADING CRITERIA FOR INSTRUMENT LANDING SYSTEM GLIDE SLOPE SITE PREPARATION

The scattering of electromagnetic radiation from rough surfaces has been studied. The diffuse and specular components of the scattered field are treated separately. Current grading of ILS sites requires rather stringent preparation of the ground. The application of this report is to develop grading criteria that reflect the statistical nature of the disturbance in observed signal rather than simply to consider the maximum allowable phase differences as the basis for establishing a grading criteria.
