THE ROLE OF FIRE BRIGADE INTERVENTION IN TUNNELS AND UNDERGROUND STATIONS

The transition from descriptive rules to performance-based regulations for fire protection in tunnels is described with reference to the design of an underground station. Risk analysis of the likelihood of failures in fire protection systems in tunnels is discussed. The fire brigade is then considered in more detail as a safety factor. The quality of the fire brigade may differ depending on the location of the fire (urban or rural), any national safety regulations, the availability of equipment, water supplies etc. It is considered that good design practice on tunnel fire safety is dependent on further research of a number of factors.
