PARKING ON THE WEB
This article describes the potential use of the internet to pre-book parking space in a city centre, as can already be done at an airport. The motorist requires firstly information about car park location and availability. Car park space booking is not a simple concept as the length of stay is often not pre-determined by the motorist; and poor parking by another driver can prevent the use of a space. Casual parkers must not be allowed in when only booked spaces are available; but spaces must not be left empty beforehand to ensure availability of booking. Payment systems also require complex management. The complexity and cost of running a web-based booking system is such that it can only be financially viable if a substantial amount of business is done through bookings. Future developments could include short-notice booking from the car.
