PAPER NO. 3. FUEL USAGE TRENDS AND ALTERNATIVE FUELS

The paper examines efforts made to improve the environment likely to be of concern in the future, including noise, natural resources and sustainability. Global changes in air quality and climate are discussed with targets set to reduce greenhouse gases by 12.5% and a reduction in emission of 20% by 2010. The UK transport sector is expected to show improvements in vehicle fuel economy with resulting savings in carbon dioxide emissions. UK tax incentives, based on vehicle CO2 emissions, are seen as moves to operate fuel efficient vehicles. Mention is made of the UK government's 10 year plan estimated to save the emission of some 1.6m tonnes of carbon by improving public transport and moving more goods by rail. An increase in worldwide fuel consumption is forecast with a decline in petrol use but an increase in diesel use following increased demand for diesel-engined vehicles. Future fuels are considered including methane and fuel-cell technologies and possible incentives for their development. For the covering abstract see ITRD E110003.
