NOISE LEVELS IN TUGS AND OTHER SMALL CRAFT

Apart from a report prepared by the National Ports Council and B.S.R.A. there has been little published information on noise levels in tugs, trawlers, and other small craft. In 1974, therefore, the Author's company, Richard Dunston (Hessle) Ltd, began to build up, from measurements in ships in its building programme, a collection of data in preparation for future contracts which might impose sound-level requirements. This work proceeded for three years and covered a variety of craft, and was supplemented in 1977 by measurements taken in five tugs (three of them built in other yards) ranging from 5 to 19 years old. The readings, all in dB(A) values, were taken by the company's staff; the methods used are described. Detailed results are presented from 11 of the ships covered in this work. The results, from 7 tugs and 4 trawlers of various types, include, for each vessel, drawings showing the measurement locations, particulars of the machinery, and a list of readings taken in the various locations. Octave band readings for the five tugs in which the 1977 measurements were made are plotted in a series of graphs. None of the eleven vessels considered embodied any noise-deadening features. The results and their implications, including the infleunce of the engine-room position, the location within the engine-room, and the engine power and rpm, the effects of reflected sound, and the potentialities of noise-reduction methods in ships of these types are discussed. No positive conclusions are possible, but the results offer a basis for future work. The company is continuing its programme of sound-level measurements during ship-trials, with the intention of assessing noise-reduction methods as they are introduced. Among the aspects that require attention are noise from hydraulic machinery in both tugs and trawlers and noise, especially during rest periods in tugs, when the main engine is shut down and a generator set is running.
