NOISE IMPLICATIONS OF TRAFFIC ENGINEERING MEASURES

The Ministry of Public Health and Environmental Hygiene commissioned a study into the implications of traffic engineering measures, particularly those which may be taken in residential areas. The study was aimed at existing situations and at those still to be designed, and was also concerned with possible side effects (on urban planning, economic, environmental and social aspects) of these traffic measures. An inventory was made of the measures intended to restrict traffic noise and of the noise levels occurring in certain situations; hypotheses were then made on the basis of the inventory. This made clear the variations in the type and effect of the traffic measures in different types of urban structures. The investigation also concerned the extent to which future designs may be influenced by the new restrictions on traffic noise laid down in a legislative proposal to serve as design criteria. It is recommended that existing and future situations should be investigated in greater detail and a method of verifying the hypotheses made in this study in various situations should be developed. /TRRL/
