EVALUATION OF A METHOD FOR UPDATING THE CHOLESKY FACTORIZATION OF A BANDED FINITE ELEMENTS STIFFNESS NATRIX

A new method for updating the Cholesky factorization of a banded matrix modified by a rank one matrix of the same band width is tested and evaluated. This technique is utilized to update the factorization of a stiffness matrix and thus is used to incorporate and evaluate modifications to an existing structural design. Computer time and cost analyses which compare the updating program to a similar finite elements program with no updating capabilities are included. The updating technique provides a substantial improvement in computational efficiency
