PUBLIC ATTITUDES. IN: HANDBOOK OF TRANSPORT AND THE ENVIRONMENT

This chapter aims to: 1) offer a basic guide to the theoretical underpinnings of the understanding of public attitudes toward transport and the environment; 2) explore the relationships between attitudes and values, terms used in many different ways in the transport field, but here are not synonymous with preference or utility; and 3) identify empirical findings from psychological research that can aid the design of progams aimed at transport/environmental benefits and enhance their potential success. Basic attitude concepts in current psychological research are first reviewed, followed by a review of research on environmental values. Lastly, the principles of changing public attitudes related to travel behavior are studied.
