AIR QUALITY. IN: HANDBOOK OF TRANSPORT AND THE ENVIRONMENT

This chapter provides an overview of all transportation-related sources of air pollution in terms of regulatory requirements, data and methods for emissions modeling and estimation, and some of the scientific issues associated with current mobile source certification and enforcement. Even though the future for air quality looks brighter, a remaining challenge is to develop more highly resolved estimation tools so the links between air quality and human exposure can be examined in a more robust manner. Further, vehicle sampling methodologies for fine particulate matter and air toxins need to be critically examined and compared with real-world concentrations of these important pollutants.
