TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE URBAN TRANSPORTATION IN THE EUROPEAN UNION? IN: MAKING URBAN TRANSPORT SUSTAINABLE
The aim of this chapter is to draw attention to various efforts made by European cities to reduce their dependency on cars for transport and mobility. Although transport clearly interacts with cities at both long-distance and intraregional levels, the focus here is on transport within cities. The problems associated with urban transportation and the possible solutions discussed in the policy literature are briefly surveyed, and the statements made at the European Union level since 1992 with the 5th Environmental Action Program are detailed. The initiatives taken by networks of cities are reviewed, and the different types of projects aiming at the development of sustainable urban transport are reviewed. The chapter concludes with an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the efforts undertaken to date by European cities to diminish their dependency on automobiles.
