APPLYING CREW RESOURCE MANAGEMENT THEORY AND METHODS TO THE OPERATIONAL ENVIRONMENT. IN: PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF AVIATION PSYCHOLOGY

Aviation industry has over the past two decades seen an almost total integration of crew resource management (CRM) principles into aviation training, and in most cases that has been beneficial. This paper will describe the author's experience as a flight deck observer and use the events of that flight to illustrate how CRM theory and methods help reach safety oriented goals and practices in aviation. The evolution of CRM is discussed and some detail is provided on CRM training and assessment. Also described are some of the effects that increased flight deck automation can have on team performance on the flight deck. A perspective on the future of CRM is provided.
