PILOT SELECTION METHODS. IN: PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF AVIATION PSYCHOLOGY
Personnel specialists in both military and commercial aviation have spent a great deal of time, money and effort attempting to identify the characteristics needed to be a good pilot and the means to accurately measure those characteristics. This paper: describes pilot selection, why it is important, and the knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics considered during selection; introduces validity and the steps involved in a validation study; reviews common methodological issues that make the interpretation of pilot selection studies more difficult and offers best practices advice; reviews military and commercial pilot selection; examines future trends in the measurement of pilot aptitude; and provides recommendations for researchers and practitioners.
